Kathy Black participated in our last offering of Financial Peace University at Granite Springs Church. Here’s what Kathy had to say about the experience…
I signed up for Financial Peace University at the beginning of 2012. Even though I’m pretty good at balancing my checkbook, I was curious about the method Mr. Ramsey would teach and there were things I’d put off thinking about, so I wanted to use the class as a motivator to get those things in order.
Two things were the biggest outcomes of the class. The first was getting going on an emergency fund of three-to-six months of expenses to prepare for the unexpected. Sure enough, in June 2012, my husband was unexpectedly offered, and took, early retirement from his job. We couldn’t afford for him to actually retire, so the emergency fund helped me to be more comfortable while he was in the job-search process.
The second most helpful thing was learning FPU’s method for getting out of debt. It turned out that in the summer, a close family member really needed this, and I was able to share the simple steps to help this person begin the process of moving toward financial freedom.
Mr. Ramsey uses scripture, common sense, experience and humor to tackle a topic most people don’t want to deal with, and encourages family communication. Going through it with other members of our church family is also a great help. If you’re putting off resolving financial issues, this class at least will help you to identify what you need, and may be a jump-start for you to make changes that improve your financial situation tremendously.
